Volume for 1890-1910 records purchases related to building and property accounts. Entries include repair and maintenance contracts (1895-1902), rents and income (1891-1896), purchase of lots (1891-1899, 1910-1911), and new building accounts (1894-1903). Also includes plat and drawing of the new executive building (ca. 1894). Second volume indexed.

The Maryland Penitentiary was the first prison established by the state and the second of its kind within the United States. The maximum security facility was authorized by the Laws of 1804, res. 15, and opened in 1811. An 1881 penitentiary publication reports that prior to its establishment, criminals were housed in county jails or workhouses and "made to labor upon the public roads."
